We are Julia Johansson and Albert Pinilla and we live in Cardedeu (Barcelona) with our two daughters.

Albert was born in Barcelona. He is an illustrator and has worked for companies and institutions around the world and board game publishers such as Jumbo Disset, Goula, Nathan and Headu.

Julia was born in Vaasa (Finland) and is an actor specialized in physical theater and dance. She has worked for theaters and independent companies and gives theater and movement classes.

In general, in the Nordic countries, there is a great culture of playing board games and Julia and her family are no exception.

For the last three years, we have lived in Cardedeu with our two daughters but previously we lived in Finland for five years. There, Albert also became interested in board games while starting working full-time as an illustrator. Since then he has worked for publishers and other companies and institutions around the world and among other projects, he has illustrated board games for companies such as Jumbo Disset, Goula,Nathan and Headu.

It was during this period in Finland that we also began to consider the possibility of creating a board game. We liked the idea of creating an inclusive game where you can learn and have fun at the same time. A year ago we had the initial idea of We Can Play and we started working on it!

Julia started working on the content and Albert on the illustrations. We tried out the game with friends using very simple prototypes and redefined the rules several times. We contacted Ludofacts, a German board game manufacturer that uses renewable energy and the best quality materials from responsibly managed forests, and agreed on a budget. With a group of friends we created the promotional video, we created the website www.we-can-play.com and profiles on social media, Kickstarter (the largest micro-patronage platform in the world) accepted the project and we got the pre-campaign page: https://www.kickstarter.com/projects/469024094/wecanplay.

We have had to invest a lot of our free time and are grateful for the great help we have received from our friends and family.

We believe a lot in this project and have received a lot of support, so we hope that the Kickstarter campaign is successfully funded and that We Can Play can become true.

The goal is to produce 4,000 copies of the game, 1000 for each language (Catalan, Spanish, English and Swedish).

We will be launching a 30-day campaign on Kickstarter (the largest crowdfunding platform in the world) in April or May 2021 to try to raise the money needed to produce the game.

We have calculated that the minimum amount needed to produce the game is approximately € 14,000. If we manage to sell enough games to raise at least € 7,000, we, Julia and Albert, will add the remaining amount.

We will produce the game as soon as possible once the Kickstarter campaign has reached its goal. We expect to be able to ship the game worldwide to all backers (the ones who purchase the game) no later than October 2021.

When will it be possible to buy the game?

When we launch the Kickstarter campaign between the months of April and May. We want to have a community of people interested in buying the game large enough to achieve the goal. This is one of the reasons why we want people to sign-up on our website

www.we-can-play.com/ or directly on the Kickstarter pre-campaign website www.kickstarter.com/projects/469024094/wecanplay

Why do you want people to register before the campaign?

This way we will know how many persons that are interested in buying the game and we will be able to notify them in advance since the game can only be purchased for 30 days.

Having enough people registered on the Kickstarter pre-campaign page will help Kickstarter algorithms position us better when starting the campaign. This fact can condition the success of a campaign.

How much will it cost?

It will cost 20€ . There will be discounts for the first hundred backers and for the purchase of more than one game apart from other special offers.

What tools do you use to get backers for the Kickstarter campaign?

More than anything we use email and Instagram to publicize our project and we try to redirect interested people to our website. There you can find more detailed information and the link to Kickstarter to sign up. We have created profiles in various networks but Instagram has been from the beginning the one that has worked best for us. Two months after starting the pre-campaign we already had more than 1000 followers.

What are the special offers you will offer during the Kickstarter campaign?

The first twenty backers will get a 10% discount (€ 18) and an extra personalized card illustrated by Albert. The first hundred backers will get a 10% discount (18 € ) and for the purchase of more than one game there will be up to a 25% discount.

How does Kickstarter work?

Kickstarter is the largest crowdfunding platform in the world. Right now we have a Kickstarter pre-campaign page where everybody interested in buying the game can register now. When the campaign begins the game can be purchased in advance. Apart from the game you can also buy other items and special offers, some of them limited. If we can pre-sell enough games to reach at least 7,000 , we, Julia and Albert, will add the remaining amount we have calculated we need (14,000 euros). We will send the game to print and we calculate to be able to deliver it to all backers in different parts of the world at the latest in October 2021. If we fail, which means we don't reach the 7000€, Kickstarter will return the money to the backers and we won't produce the game for the moment.

How will you inform people when Kickstarter starts?

We will publish the specific date on social networks (Facebook, Instagram, Twitter) a few days before and we will send an email to every person who have registered through our website as soon as we know the exact date. Kickstarter will also inform those who have registered on the pre-campaign page the same day it starts.

How did you choose the women?

There are many examples of women who have stood out in history, so it has not been easy to choose only 60. We have looked for those facts that seem most relevant and interesting to us but we have also looked for a balance between known popular facts and others not so well known. It has also been important for us to give a world wide perspective.

We have also received advice from various people. For example, on behalf of our friend Magalí Lladó, historian and feminist to whom we thank very much for her collaboration.

What inspired you to create We Can Play?

Throughout history, great women have fought for our rights and defied the norms. Women showing us a path to follow. Scientists, explorers, activists, spies, inventors, actors, athletes, artists! Our hopes are that this game will keep their examples alive in a fun way. Encourage the new generations to dream big. And show that there’s place for all of us.

Why have you decided to do it in four languages?

Julia's mother tongue is Swedish and Albert's is Catalan, so it was natural for us to go for those languages. Both Spanish and English are very close to us and they are among the most widely spoken in the world as well.

What do you plan to do if the project succeed?

If this project works out successfully, we imagine the possibility of making new expansions by adding other women that we haven't been able to add this time. We would also like to create new games that follow the purpose of promoting inclusion and against all kinds of discrimination.

What kind of risks can the project have?

If we achieve the goal on Kickstarter, the stakes are low. We have already established a collaboration with a manufacturer in Germany, Ludo Fact, and the budget is fixed. Alberto has a long experience working as an illustrator in the board game industry, he has worked for Jumbo Diset, Goula, Nathan and Headu. He has also participated as an illustrator in projects that have been successfully funded on Kickstarter such as the book "Climate Change; The Choice is Ours" by Bushel and Peck Books. We have contacted several distribution teams, looking for the best suitable conditions for our project and we have set a long time frame for shipping to ensure we can meet the deadlines and we hope to ship sooner.
